# Common Sense

By Shawn Wilson & Henrik Sætre · King’s Eat, book 1

Profile: https://hahafiction.com/books/common-sense-1009b466/

Pim Fudworth joins the magical complaints department in King’s Eat as an apprentice. The ministry is failing, and problems its bureaucrats have ignored need someone willing to solve them. Pim tackles the work with help from Brenaris, a demon familiar who would prefer a less sympathetic colleague.

## What makes it funny?

Buying experience points attracts the attention of the Experience Revenue Service. In a town where higher levels mean a longer life, even getting ahead in a game-like system comes with a tax authority ready to intervene.

### The comedy at work

Pim’s practical kindness irritates Brenaris, a grumpy demon in a suit who regards empathy as a defect. Their disagreement supplies an argument inside the office, while the magical government makes familiar bureaucratic language into literal threats.

### Try this if…

Office problem solving and a capable underdog give this adventure its direction. The author describes a sunny lead who succeeds through kindness, with found family alongside the work.

### Good to know

Levels and abilities matter, but the author describes a light use of game statistics. Readers seeking detailed numerical progression should bear that emphasis in mind.
