# BuyMort: Grand Opening

*How I Became the Accidental Warlord of Arizona*

By Joseph Phelps & Damien Hanson · Shopocalypse Saga, book 1

Profile: https://hahafiction.com/books/buymort-grand-opening-2e977ca9/

Tyson Dawes has a caretaking job at an Arizona campground, very little money and no wish to change the world. BuyMort changes it for him. A retail monopoly spanning multiple universes arrives on Earth, and alien entrepreneurs begin selling whatever the system has not marked as private property.

## What makes it funny?

The shopping interface installs itself in minds, including animals' minds. Thinking about a purchase or pointing at something saleable can open a transaction. A civilization-wide catastrophe therefore comes with the persistent convenience of being able to shop through it.

### The comedy at work

Algorithms, advertising and service fees become instruments of conquest. The details are familiar from online shopping, but BuyMort extends them across every part of life. A character with almost no money has to confront a company that controls the whole market.

### Try this if…

The central figure is a flawed slacker pushed into defending the people around him. Readers who enjoy commercial language used in grotesque circumstances may find plenty in this invasion to recognize from ordinary shopping.

### Good to know

The book includes plentiful profanity and fantasy violence, follows a single viewpoint and has no harem. Its interface centers on buying and selling rather than conventional character statistics.
