Andrew Yancy wants his police badge back. Stuck inspecting restaurants after his suspension, he sees a chance in a severed arm: solving the case might restore his career. The investigation takes him from Florida to the Bahamas.

## What makes it funny?

A fishing-trip customer responds to the discovery of a human arm by worrying about how much room it will leave for his catch. The captain’s sarcastic answers make the tourist’s priorities look even worse.

### The comedy at work

Hiaasen lets petty self-interest persist through gruesome events. The crime plot gives that selfishness larger targets, including greedy developers and people destroying the places they hope to profit from.

### Try this if…

The mix suits readers who want a murder investigation with caustic jokes about greed. Its severed-limb humor is an early indication of how comfortable the comedy is around grisly material.

### Good to know

Expect violence, decomposing remains and profanity. This begins the Andrew Yancy series.
