Rylan hopes a magical Skill will let him pay off the debt that has kept him serving the Thistlethorns since childhood. When acquiring one instead puts him at risk of being bound by a Spirit Contract, he escapes into the cloudsea. Other people follow him into the fog, and nobody knows the way out.

## What makes it funny?

The opening chapter gives floating sheep a practical drawback: you should avoid standing underneath them. Their shepherd’s stained, extra-wide hat supplies the explanation. Rylan also makes generous use of “fog” as a swear while trying to finish his chores.

### The comedy at work

Rylan has sarcastic answers ready for the staff who keep handing him work, but usually has to swallow them. His private commentary lets him complain when his position requires obedience, especially as one last chore keeps turning into another.
